Professional Experience

Phumelele completed his articles at Deneys Reitz Attorneys some 20 years ago. Phumelele has worked as a director in the Commercial Departments of South Africa’s largest and leading law firms including Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs (ENS) Inc and Werksmans Inc. He has also worked for a portfolio company of a large US based Private Equity Firm, Denham Capital as General Counsel. Phumelele’s work experience has included providing legal, drafting and regulatory advice in transactions in the mining, energy, telecoms, aviation, manufacturing, hotel, hospital, transport, logistics, stadium, rail, power plant project financing and development sectors, including putting together and negotiating project agreements, project reporting and compliance documentation as well as funding documentation, achieving financial close successfully in some of the said projects.
Phumelele’s early work experience also included working for an international Investment Bank as a structured finance associate where he dealt with structured transactions on particularly the following financial products namely Project Finance, Asset Securitisation, Export Trade, Aircraft Finance and Debt Capital Market Instruments including Eurobonds and Medium Term Notes as well as Loan Syndication.
For the years 2013, 2014 and 2015, Phumelele has been named by the International Financial Law Review (IFLR) 1000 publication as a Leading Lawyer in South Africa in the fields of Energy Law, Environmental Law, Mining and Infrastructure Projects.
